Look Out for Your Eyes
Diabetes is a condition that can dramatically impact your life.
If untreated, diabetes can cause permanent damage to your vision. In fact, your optometrist may be able to diagnose conditions like diabetes before your doctor. Your eyes hold signs and indicators of certain underlying health concerns before you may notice them.
It’s important to schedule and attend regular eye exams with your optometrist to ensure your eyes are healthy.
Diabetes & Your Vision
Diabetes is a condition that affects 1 out of 3 Canadians and impacts the body’s ability to process sugar (glucose). It can cause a variety of vision and eye problems, some of which can result in permanent damage if untreated.
There are strategies and treatments available to protect your eyes and vision while managing your diabetes, such as:
- Quitting smoking
- Attending a dilated eye exam once a year
- Managing your blood glucose, blood pressure, & cholesterol
Depending on your health and needs, your optometrist may recommend you schedule and attend multiple eye exams to ensure your treatment and care are effective for you.
What We Look For
Diabetes can increase your risk for eye conditions, such as:
By getting regular eye exams, your optometrist can help detect and treat these conditions before they cause permanent damage to your vision.
How We Detect Disease
Diabetic eye exams are specially designed to detect signs of eye disease because people with diabetes are at a much higher risk of developing visual conditions.
We take an extra level of care, which usually includes dilating your pupils to give us a better window to the inside of your eye. This allows us to take a closer look into the eye for any indicators of disease.
Our team uses quick, non-invasive tests, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Retinal Fundas Photography, to take pictures of the inside of your retina.
You’ll also sit with your optometrist to discuss your eyes and eye health, as well as treatment strategies to manage your vision and diabetes. You’ll be treated with compassion and care so you feel comfortable asking any questions you may have (and no, none of your questions are silly).
